Would it be okay to cut a circular skirt pattern in half if I don't have fabric wide? enough?
I am making a wedding dress and it has a huge fishtail skirt at the bottom. I have ordered duchess satin that is 60" wide but I don't think it will be wide enough. The pattern is a large circular skirt pattern so if I don't have enough fabric would it still be okay if I cut it in half or quarters? Thanks!
Answer:
Two things:
1. you do not need to cut the pattern, you need to fold your fabric differently. Open the fabric up so that it is laying flat and there are no folds. Now, instead of folding from side to side, you will fold from top to bottom. This should give you the width you need.
2. Cutting the pattern piece is fine and may even add extra interest. But be very careful. Let's say you cut the piece in half - you cannot just sew the two pieces back together after you cut, you will be losing one and a fourth inches in your seam allowance. So, if you cut the pattern (into however many pieces) you will need to ADD 5/8 inch seam allowance to the sides that have been cut. Pin your pieces to the fabric. Using a ruler mark little dashed lines on the fabric 5/8 from the side of the pattern piece that has been cut. When you cut your fabric out, follow the dashed line. Now when you sew the pieces together, it will be the same size as if you had not pieced it.
